Shade Sails

The Shade Sail Is A Piece Of Fabric

A shade sail is a piece of fabric which has no predetermined configuration for set up as an outdoor shade. A popular example is the Coolaroo which looks like a large triangular fabric, protectively stitched at the edges, and comes with strategically-placed metal rings or metal-rimmed holes.

These rings and holes can be attached with hooks that in turn attach to structures to stretch out the fabric over some area requiring shading. Usually they must be pulled taut so that they do not droop over the shaded area and so that they provide the maximal amount of shade. The requirement of being taut makes these known as "tension" structures.

Robust And Tense

In some ways, sun shade sails are the simplest kind of outdoor shades because they are simply a piece of fabric. But the fact that they need to be robust to stretching in different ways, as well as bear the tension of hooks pulling at their edges, means that the construction should be of high and durable quality. The points of hook attachment of the shade sails are usually reinforced fabric, must like strong seat belts, and further reinforced with a metal ring.

Attachment Points

How and where should they be attached? The answer is basically anywhere you can put a hook. Some homeowners place three strategically-positioned wooden or metal poles on their grounds that can accommodate a stretched shade sail between the poles. Others may use two poles and the side of the house for the third anchor. Still others may use trees in their backyard. As long as a hook can be attached to the surface of some structure, it can act as an anchor point. Attachment point to hooks are usually supplied with the shade sail as part of the included accessories. These metal attachments, eye bolts and plates can be affixed with screws onto the surface of the structure.

Customization

Some companies deal primarily in precut sizes. Yet you may have noticed in some municipally managed areas that the product seem to have extremely large sizes or strange shapes. This is because there are firms which use design engineering to come up with custom designed shapes (with software such as CAD - computer aided design). So a home owner may, at some extra cost, engage in the services of shade sail design firms and create his or her own designs.

Pergolas and gazebos

These are free-standing or add-on structures which aid in shading for the exterior of a home.

Patio and deck awning

Modern retractable awnings extend far out over a deck, at the same time shading the exterior and reducing the amount of light entering windows, doors etc.

Outdoor umbrellas

Outdoor umbrellas may be simple or accessorized with fans, lights, and even small portable televisions.
